AMA Crossing Guides Program
Terms and Conditions
The Alberta Motor Association (“AMA”) is pleased to support schools that wish to develop and implement an AMA Crossing Guides Program (the “Program”). AMA has a long history of supporting school‑based safety initiatives across Alberta and provides guidance, training materials, and equipment to help improve pedestrian safety around school communities.
While AMA provides support and program guidance, the AMA Crossing Guides Program is operated and managed by the school. These Terms and Conditions outline the expectations that must be understood and agreed to before the Program can be established.
School and Volunteer Acknowledgement
The AMA Crossing Guides Program may involve participation from school‑approved adult volunteers, which may include parents, caregivers, school staff, or approved community members (each a “Crossing Guide”).
I, <Name>, as the designated School Administrator (Principal or designate from the school), confirm that the following terms and conditions have been discussed with relevant staff and approved Crossing Guides and that the school wishes to participate in the Program.

Program Operation and Responsibilities
- The school will determine which crossings and shifts require coverage and will ensure the Program can be operated safely and consistently based on the school’s specific needs and environment.
- The school is responsible for recruiting, approving, scheduling, and supervising all Crossing Guides.
- Each Crossing Guide understands that participation in the Program does not provide legal authority to direct or control traffic on any public roadway.
- The safety of students, adult Crossing Guides, and road users is the top priority in the operation of the Program.
- All approved Crossing Guides will review and follow:
- Applicable school and school authority policies, and
- AMA‑provided roles, responsibilities, and operating procedures for the AMA Crossing Guides Program.
- All approved Crossing Guides will complete any required Program training, as determined by AMA and coordinated by the School Administrator. All Crossing Guides must meet any applicable school or school authority requirements, including those related to volunteer screening.
- The School Administrator is responsible for oversight of the Program, including ensuring that applicable standards and practices for both the Program and school board are followed.
Equipment and Use
- Any equipment, tools, or resources provided by AMA:
- may only be used by school‑approved adult Crossing Guides, and
- must not be used by students or by anyone under the age of 18, or by anyone not approved and trained by the School Administrator.
- All equipment supplied is considered on loan to a registered school and will be returned to AMA should the program end.
Program Management and Communication
The school accepts responsibility for the day‑to‑day operation of the Program, including:
- onboarding and orientation of new Crossing Guides,
- refresher or follow‑up training,
- scheduling and supervision, and
- periodic review of Program operation.
AMA will be notified promptly if:
- the school is facing challenges with Crossing Guides, students, users of the road, or otherwise with the implementation of the Program; or
- the Program is paused or discontinued.
Where appropriate, AMA may provide guidance to support continuation of the Program.
If AMA raises a concern related to a specific Crossing Guide or Program practice, the school agrees to review and address the concern through its internal processes.
Support and Discontinuation of Support
AMA’s role is supportive and advisory. AMA does not conduct routine audits or ongoing on‑site supervision of school programs.
AMA may discontinue its support of a school’s AMA Crossing Guides Program, with written notice, if:
- the school no longer wishes to participate in the Program;
- the school does not follow AMA provided Program guidance and procedures; or
- the actions or conduct of a Crossing Guide or volunteer negatively impact AMA or the AMA School Safety Program’s reputation.
