AMA will provide your school with the appropriate number of vests, stop signs, and whistles (in some regions). All signs, vests, and whistles supplied will remain the property of AMA, and all equipment must be returned to AMA if your school needs to pause or discontinue the program for any reason.

Yes. Before patrollers can join the program, a parent or guardian must submit a signed Parent/Guardian Consent Form.

Not at all. The safety of all pedestrians is important, and so is the opportunity for students to develop leadership skills!

School supervisors are responsible for the day-to-day management and support of their patrol team, with support from us every step of the way. With that in mind, if you’re a school supervisor, you’ll focus on obtaining parental/guardian consent, scheduling patrol shifts, supervising patrollers at the crosswalk, recruiting students to join the patrol team, performing assessments, and coaching your patrol team.

No. While the support of school staff and/or trained parents is essential to the program’s success, this program is intended to help students develop leadership skills in addition to keeping roads around schools safe. Only student patrollers are permitted to wear AMA vests, use AMA stop signs and whistles, and execute the crossing procedures.

Unfortunately, not all schools and crosswalks meet the requirements for an AMA School Safety Patrol team. If this is the case, we’d still love to help your school by connecting you with safety tips.

Nothing! We’re committed to helping make our communities safer, and this program is an important part of that commitment. We’ll provide all equipment, coaching, and training materials at no cost to your school.

The School Safety Patrol program is open to students in grades five and six. Exceptions may be made for grade four or seven students, with approval from an AMA School Safety Patrol staff member.

We recommend three patrollers at each crosswalk at once, and two is the absolute minimum. If possible, we recommend you establish a team of 25 to 30 patrollers to rotate through shifts. This will ensure everyone gets to take breaks between shifts and that you’ll always have backups if someone is unable to take their shift.
