AMA Crossing Guides

Many school communities are concerned about busy streets, unsafe driving, and rushed pedestrian movement before and after school. These challenges affect everyone on the road. While long term solutions take time, having trained adults at key crossings is one direct step that can make school travel safer.

What AMA Crossing Guides Do
Manage pedestrian flow by opening crossing only when safe
Provide visibility to alert drivers of pedestrians crossing using a handheld flag
Coach students on consistent crossing habits from the sidewalk
Demonstrate Point – Pause – Proceed
Help students become confident, alert, and independent when crossing streets

What They Don’t Do
X Direct traffic (step into traffic) or use stop signs
X Manage parking
X Enforce traffic laws

Who Can Be AMA Crossing Guides
